The Catlins

Off the beaten track on the unspoilt, rugged Southern coast of New Zealand winding between Fortrose and Kaka Point, you will travel through our beloved farmland, forest and seascape.

Visit Nugget Point Lighthouse and the beautiful golden sandy beaches of Cannibal Bay and Surat Bay to see see the Hooker sea lions, NZ fur seals, and elephant seals, and Yellow-Eyed Penguins (Hoiho) in their natural habitat.

Take a bushwalk through our native forest and discover Purukanui Falls, then on to Purukanui Bay in its untouched serenity.

Do not forget to stop at the Florence Hill lookout and step out of your car with your camera in hand!

Explore the 180 million yr old petrified forest at Curio Bay where the Hector dolphins play in the bay.

There are so many choices of walking tracks and byways for you.

Take some time to discover the sometimes peaceful, sometimes savage treasures of the Catlins.

Explore, then explore some more… but do not forget to take some time to talk to the locals and learn a little of the history and unique culture of THE CATLINS…

"We stayed for 2 nights at the Owaka Lodge motel in February and we wish we could have stayed longer. The motel unit was just what we wanted, it was comfortable with lovely homely touches like the fresh roses and muffins and the kitchen area had everything that we needed in it. Gaynor was so welcoming and really made us feel at home. We had a fantastic day exploring the Catlins, the highlights for us being Curio Bay and the waterfalls. Unfortunately the tide times meant we did nott see Cathedral "
